Sri Lanka is one of South Asia’s most popular destinations, and entry is straightforward once you understand the system. Since 17 April 2024, all visitors require an electronic visa obtained before travel. This guide covers the visa types, how to apply, and the pitfalls worth avoiding.

The Sri Lankan e-Visa

The critical thing to know up front: apply only through the official government website, eta.gov.lk. A large number of unofficial third-party sites market themselves as visa services, charge substantially inflated fees, and in some cases produce documentation that causes problems at the border. There is no benefit to using them.

Apply directly, pay the official fee, and keep the confirmation.

Types of Sri Lankan Visas

Tourist Visa

For leisure travel, visiting family, attending cultural events, or receiving medical treatment. Available as single entry, double entry or multiple entry, so choose based on whether you plan to leave and re-enter — for example on a side trip to the Maldives or India.

Business Visa

For short-term professional activity such as meetings, conferences and negotiations. Also available in single, double and multiple entry forms. Note that this does not permit taking up employment in Sri Lanka.

Transit Visa

For passengers passing through Sri Lanka en route elsewhere, valid for a maximum of 48 hours.

The Application Process

Requirements:

• A passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival
• A completed online application form
• Payment made through official channels only
• Confirmed onward or return travel, and accommodation details

Steps: Complete the form at eta.gov.lk, pay the fee, and retain the approval confirmation. Carry a printed copy along with the digital one — border processing is easier if you can hand it over.

Extensions and Longer Stays

Visitors can extend their stay through the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, or online through the department’s system. Apply before your current visa expires rather than after; overstaying attracts fines and complicates future entry.

For stays beyond what a tourist visa allows, Sri Lanka offers residence visa categories covering employment, study, religious work and investment. These have their own separate requirements and are applied for through different channels.

Exemptions

Certain nationalities qualify for waived or free visas, and dual citizens of Sri Lanka have separate arrangements. Exemption lists change from time to time, so verify your own nationality’s current status on the official site rather than relying on older guidance.

• Keep your visa valid for the whole of your stay and track the expiry date.
• Do not work on a tourist visa. Unauthorised employment carries serious consequences including deportation and re-entry bans.
